Best Alpujarra Restaurants for Local Cuisine.

This article will recommend the best Alpujarra Restaurants for Local Cuisine. We will make sure that you come back home with the best taste and memory ever!

Alpujarra gastronomy is based on agricultural products and the abundant edible and seasoning plants that grow there. We can´t forget that we are in an area occupied by different populations over the centuries, gastronomy is influenced by the different cultures that have taken place in this area, with the greatest boom occurring during the Islamic era, due to the cultural mix.

Later it would be combined with the tastes and recipes of the Galician and Navarrese settlers… They introduced pork, whose meat constitutes one of the main bases of Alpujarra gastronomy.

In every house, one or two pigs were raised for family consumption, and the legacy of this custom is that nowadays, the Spanish ham and the cold cuts in this area are some of the best quality in the whole country.

Let´s start with the restaurants’ recommendations.

Corral del Castaño in Capileira

The restaurant is located in the center of Capileira, and Manuel Callejas, an avant-garde chef of Spanish cuisine, runs it.
The most popular dish is of course “Plato alpujarreño“, which is made with a variety of ingredients, including potatoes, chorizo, morcilla, jamón, and eggs.

The potatoes are cooked in a simple way, called “a lo pobre,” which means “in a poor way.” This simply means that the potatoes are fried in olive oil with onions and peppers. The chorizo and morcilla are also fried in olive oil. The jamón is thinly sliced and served on top of the dish. The eggs are fried and placed on top of the dish.

We also recommend trying the stews and they have vegan and vegetarian options.

L´Atelier in Mecina

Mecina is a tiny village with about 100 residents.
In a small house, we find this hidden gem, L´Atelier. A restaurant that makes you feel like you are having lunch in a family house. This is what Michel and Briggite (the owners) make you feel all the time.

The restaurant is vegetarian and it is one of the best gastronomic experiences in the area based on an organic cuisine with local products and local producers.

Ruta del Mulhacen in Pampaneira

A family business that opened its doors for the first time in 1974.

Ruta del Mulhacen is located in one of the most beautiful villages in La Alpujarra, Pampaneira.
The tradition is in every corner of the restaurant. The ambiance and decoration will make you feel like a local inside a typical Alpujarra house.
But if you prefer a lunch with views, there is a terrace with amazing views of the mountain and the white-faced houses of the nearest villages.

The food is made traditionally, the same way that the family’s grandma used to cook for the whole family.

Mesón del Jamón in Trevélez

Located in the center of the beautiful Granada town of Trevélez, surrounded by typical Alpujarran houses and with a panoramic terrace on the upper floor where you can enjoy food while observing the wonderful views of the valley is the Mesón del Jamón restaurant.

In Mesón del jamón they care about the local producers and sustainability, which is the reason why their cuisine is prepared with local products and in a traditional way.

We recommend trying the ham of course, but also the soups and stews which are the specialty of the restaurant.

Abuxarra restaurant in Capileira

The Abuxarra Restaurant is located in Capileira, Granada.

They care about what matters, the product. You will find at the restaurant a simple decoration and a simple menu. They are the masters of grilled meat, and what meat!
One of the best quality in all of the province!

So, we recommend going to this restaurant after a nice hike around the area and hungry to enjoy a full menu.

Teide restaurant in Bubión

Bubión is located in the Poqueira Valley, in La Alpujarra (Granada).

It is in Bubión where Teide restaurant is located.

A family business with more than 50 years of history.

This family restaurant began its journey in the 70s as a restaurant at the hands of Julio his wife Encarnación who opened it to the public on August 15, 1970. Since then it has remained in the family, standing out with a very close treatment and service, and of course, excellent cuisine based on local products and the traditional way of cooking in the area.
