Is Nerja worth visiting?

We have received this question from some of our clients when they look for information about the destinations we work with and through this article we will let you know why the answer is a YES!

1. What is Nerja famous for?

Nerja is famous for its many things, including:

  • Its beaches: Nerja has some of the most beautiful beaches in Spain. The most famous beach in Nerja is Burriana Beach, which is a long, sandy beach with clear waters.
  • Its caves: Nerja is home to the Nerja Caves, which are a series of caves that were discovered in 1959. The caves are home to prehistoric paintings and sculptures.

2. Nerja Caves

A series of caves located in the town of Nerja, in the province of Málaga, Spain. The caves were discovered in 1959 by a group of young boys who were exploring the area.

Prehistoric paintings and sculptures inside the caves date back to the Paleolithic era.

For these many reasons, the Nerja Caves are one of the most popular tourist attractions in Spain.

The caves are divided into three main sections:

  • The Hall of the Cataclysm is the largest chamber in the caves. It is named after the collapse that occurred here millions of years ago.
  • The Hall of the Ghosts: This chamber is home to a series of stalactites and stalagmites that resemble ghosts.
  • The Hall of the Paintings: This chamber is home to a series of prehistoric paintings. The most famous painting in the cave is the “Nerja Horse”.

The Nerja Caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They are a valuable example of prehistoric art and a must-see for any visitor to Nerja.

  • The best time to visit Nerja is during the spring or fall. The weather is mild during these months, and there are fewer tourists.
